What is IFSC code?


The Indian Financial System Code is also known as IFSC is an 11-character code used by the Reserve Bank of India to identify all the Bank branches within the NEFT network uniquely. The IFSC code is also used by the RTGS and IMPS finance transfer systems. The IFSC code makes the inter-bank electronic funds transfer easier by identifying the remitter and destination bank branch.

How to verify IFSC Code?


The simplest and best way to verify IFSC code is your cheque book. Most of the banks now print IFSC Codes on the cheque books. Your bank account pass book should also have the IFSC Code printed on it.

The 11-digit code differs from branch to branch of all the participating banks. An IFSC code is generated very systematically in such a manner that the first four characters are alphabets denotes the name of a particular bank.

For example,

The IFSC code of a Kotak Bank branch is KKBK0004262. In this case, the starting four characters i.e. KKBK represents the bank name, 5th character is 0 which is reserved for future use and last 6 characters (004262) represent the Kotak Bank branch code. Similarly, the IFSC code of a branch of Axis Bank is UTIB0000242.
